The Cheese List

How The Cheese List Started

Italian Market-Cheese Shop
Italian Market Di Bruno Bros

Growing up I’ve always had a strong desire for delicious cuisines and food delicacies especially cheese. I love to embrace different cultures and the best way to learn and experience cultures, has been through their food and cheese. Wether it’s finding the perfect tacos at a local food truck or going to find the best Italian gnocchi around. Delicious specialty foods have been a great staple in my life. This is why I created a cheese list.

The Problem

The South Philadelphia Italian Market has been one of my favorite places to visit ever since I was young. This market has some of the best delicacies in the country and I have always enjoyed going into the cheese shops and to try all kinds of new things. There was one problem though. The list of cheeses that was offered in those shops seemed infinite. It was a bit daunting to go in and talk with the workers. These worker knew so much about cheese from all over the world, how would I ever talk with them and convey what kind of cheese I was looking for. Every time I went into one of those markets, I had no idea where to start. I could never remember the names of the cheeses I tried before. This is why I created the cheese list. Let’s continue to the solution.

The Solution

This list was fundamental to me in learning about all the different cheese these shops had to offer. Every time I would go in to a shop and find a new cheese I would write down the names of the cheese. I also would sometimes write the country of origin. This gave me a baseline for the next time I went into the shops and each time it felt less intimidating. As my list grew so did my knowledge and confidence. Pretty soon I was able to have conversations with the market workers about all the different cheese. I also sounded slightly knowledgeable. Some of my favorite cheeses from the list include, Primadona, Gruyer, Piave Vecchio. That’s just the tip of the Iceberg.

Having this list has been a great success for me and furthermore I plan to continue to build upon it and improve my knowledge of all the different cheeses out there. Learning each time I go into the market and not being afraid to ask questions is a must as everyone is different and everyone has to start somewhere. This is just one of the many experiences in my life that gives me the qualifications to run Piacere Cacio. I also can’t wait to continue to learn more throughout this venture!
